What Do You Do When God Won’t Do Anything…?

This morning I ran across a news story about a young man named Brian Banks.  He was a former high school football star with a bright future.  He was wrongly accused of rape at age 17, by a young woman who he went to school with.  Brian was convicted of this rape and spent the next 5 years of his life in prison as a result of it.  His accuser recently admitted to lying about the rape and Brian was then exonerated in May 2012.  A bunch of questions came to mind after reading his story.

  • Why would God allow this young man who was in the prime of his life to spend 5 years in prison for a crime that we now know he did not commit?  Didn’t God know this was time that he would never be able to recoup?
  • What was going through Brian’s head as he sat there in his cell, knowing full well of his innocence, but serving a sentence while his accuser lived in freedom?
  • Why didn’t God stop it?  Why didn’t He justify him before it was too late??

Have you ever been at that place?  I’m not a gambling woman but I’m willing to bet that you have!  That place of waiting.  And waiting… And waiting…  A place of waiting for God to move miraculously when you are seemingly at the end of your rope.  Maybe you were in a situation in which you were about to lose your home…and you did.  Maybe you had a loved one who was facing a life threatening disease and instead of them being cured…they died.  Or maybe you needed God to justify you like this young man and instead of being justified…you were convicted.

There will always be some moments in your life that will completely blind side you.  As believers we are taught we should always hope for the best.  And generally speaking, we should.  But what do you do in those times that you have prayed so hard that your knees are numb?  Maybe you have wept yourself to sleep believing that when you wake up – THAT DAY WILL BE THE DAY!  But when that day arrives, you still got nothing.  Can you imagine in the Bible days when Martha and her sister Mary waited for Jesus to come to heal their brother Lazarus?  Pacing the floor wondering “where is Jesus?  This is His friend, He has the power to heal our brother!  Surely He wont let Lazarus die?”  But by the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been dead four days….

There is a difference between trusting and understanding.  Pastor Pete Wilson of Cross Point Church in Nashville, TN says, “Trust is something you must have!  Because you must trust even when you don’t have an understanding.”

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;”  Proverbs 3:5

I’m not sure if I really have an explanation as to why God makes us wait or go through tragic situations in our lives.  I’m not even sure we will ever find out in this lifetime.  But what seems to be most important in anything that we go through is not our final destination, but who we BECOME in the process.  God wants to increase our faith and to know Him on a level that just going to church every Sunday can’t bring.  Simply reading your Bible cannot get you to this place.  Listening to worship music wont accomplish it either.  Like He did for Mary and Martha, He wants to increase our faith and put us in a place in which we have no other choice but to TRUST HIM.  God will remove our options to show us how much we have neglected Him at times.  It is in these times when we have nothing or no one else, that we truly begin to learn who God is.  Things may even get worse before they get better but James 1:2-4 instructs us to do the following:

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.  But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

It’s through these times of great uncertainty that we lean on Him the most.  We may never know the WHY in this lifetime but its our own unique journey that God takes us on that He uses to build character, and to help us connect with others in their time of suffering.
