[MINI-COURSE] Building Your Email List

Today’s marketing and promotion world is all about social media.

And while having a social media presence is a must in your business, this is a touchy subject. At the end of the day you don’t really own those contacts—you’re simply “renting” them. You can put months, even years into building a devoted fan base on a social media platform but if one day Facebook decides to change their algorithm and limits who can see your messages, you’re no better off than when you started.

That’s why I want to share a tool with you in this mini-course that will make all the difference to your business goals – an email list! I know that building an engaged email list may seem like a daunting task. But in today’s mini-course we’ll talk about the fundamentals of an effective list and why you need more than just your social media accounts to make a profitable impact in business!

This lesson is all about taking control of your message and delivering it to an audience of people who can make a measurable impression on your business’ bottom line. I’ll show you how this secret weapon can build trust with your customers. Take a listen now to learn why:

Here’s a quick recap:

Here are some things you can do essentially for free in order to start building your list:

  1. Ask and you shall receive. Include clear and specific calls to action in your newsletter and your blog posts that encourage people to share your content if they found it valuable.

  2. Make it easy for people to share your content. Use social sharing plug-ins on your website to make it easy for your content to be spread.

  3. Use Pop Up opt in boxes on your website.

  4. If you’re speaking in public or at events, consider bringing a tablet device and get people to sign up for your list on the spot. MailChimp has an app that you can download to your device so that they can electronically sign up to your list as well as some of the other email marketing services have similar apps for sign ups.

  5. Consider using a little tool called the Hello Bar on your site to encourage folks to sign up for your list. SquareSpace websites also have a similar feature.

  6. If you are a product based business, send samples of your product to bloggers or brands that you love who have engaged audiences.

  7. Host live or virtual speaking events and of course remind the attendees to sign up. Don’t be afraid to ask!

  8. Submit your businesses to directories, review sites like Yelp, showcases, “best of” lists, awards, etc.

When you finally start sending out information to your list, don’t take it personal when someone opts out. Your content won’t be for everybody. Just keep building your list by going after your ideal customers and you’ll be fine.
